Banda 71 are an 8 piece band playing samba and other types of Brazilian Music. The aim is to delight audiences with a cross-section of traditional Brazilian music, famous the world over for it’s infectious swing and unique blend of African and European roots.
The reportoire is designed to highlight the wide variety of different styles, instruments and techniques that can be found in the different parts of this vast music obsessed country. You will hear traditional and carnaval favourites and less familiar songs from Bahia, Pernambuco, Sergipe, Para and of course the famous sambas of Rio de Janeiro where we will escort you back in time to the beautiful and much loved 60s and 70s.
All the members of the band have studied Brazilian music for many years and most have been very active members and driving forces of Glasgow’s bateria SambaYaBamba for as long as anyone cares to remember. They have had access to many of the best samba directors, players and tutors from Europe and Brazil. Several of the band are members of the pan-European bateria Bloco X based in Germany, and Roddy and Doug have both made several research trips to Brazil and have played in Rio samba schools in carnaval for Academicos da Rocinha and Unidos do Parque Curicica respectively.
